Picking The Right T-Shirt – Easy As 1, 2, 3!

Picking the Right T-Shirt - Easy as 1, 2, 3!

How to Choose the Right Promotional T-Shirt

T-shirts have come a long way since the standard white undershirts of the 1950’s, but all those options can make finding the right one complicated. At MARCO, we’re here to help with this step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Choose a Fabric

In the early days of t-shirts, there was one fabric choice: white cotton. Advances in fiber technology have opened up a multitude of other options, and choices can be overwhelming. Here’s what you need to know:

  • T-shirts come in different weights, measured in ounces – the higher the number, the heavier the fabric. Heavier weight fabrics may be more durable, but may not feel as soft or may not be as breathable as a lighter weight fabric.
  • Cotton can be turned into the yarns that make t-shirts in several ways. Ring-spun cotton is the costliest but results in the softest and strongest fabric.
  • 100% cotton t-shirts are breathable, accept imprints well, are durable and are the least expensive.
  • The addition of polyester will increase the softness, reduce shrinkage, reduce wrinkling, and add an element of moisture-wicking.
  • Tri-blend fabrics are the newest on the market and combine cotton, polyester, and an additional fabric such as rayon to give the softest feel while keeping all the benefits of each fiber.

Step 2: Imprint Method

  • Screen printing is the most popular imprint method for t-shirts, and appropriate for all fabrics. It is most commonly seen with just one color, but adding more colors immediately adds more visual interest and gets your message seen!
  • Embroidery offers a professional-looking option for t-shirts that serve as uniforms.
  • Digital printing, or direct-to-garment printing is a new technology that allows for very precise, full-color imprints. This method is best for light colored, cotton-rich t-shirts only, as the base color of the shirt can interfere with the print colors.

Step 3: Location, Location, Location

  • Company logos are most frequently found on the left chest, center front, or center back of t-shirts.
  • Less common imprint areas make your message stand out. Consider options like sleeves, at the hip, running up the side – imprints can be positioned anywhere on a t-shirt!

When you combine the right fabric, the right imprint techniques, used in the right locations, you’re sure to create a custom t-shirt that your recipients will wear for years to come.
