The Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) serves the city of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and surrounding areas. It is one of the largest school districts in the state, with over 10,000 students enrolled in its schools. The district is known for its strong academic programs, diverse student body, and commitment to providing a well-rounded education.
Additionally, the OASD has over 300 students with refugee backgrounds, with more than 80% of these students having resettled in Oshkosh within the past 5 years. Recognizing the unique needs of their diverse student population, the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Multicultural Team launched the SPARK summer school program (Supporting Positive Attitudes and Resilience for Kids) to provide targeted support.
SPARK is a dynamic summer program designed to enhance the mental health and community engagement of refugee youth. Through a blend of educational and recreational activities, SPARK aims to inspire, motivate, and empower young refugees, helping them build meaningful connections and realize their full potential. By participating in SPARK, students not only develop critical skills but also cultivate a sense of belonging within their new community, fostering long-term success and well-being.
