Soaking up the sun can be a favorite pastime for many, particularly those in climates that only enjoy limited summer months each year. Whether it is sporting events, festivals, farmer’s markets, or a day at the pool, some sun exposure is unavoidable. However, sun-safety is an important consideration when outside no matter what the season. Each year 6 million people are treated for skin cancer of any kind and $9 billion is spent on skin cancer treatments in the US. There are many ways to help minimize the risks of UV exposure.

5 Steps to Promote Sun-Safety and Your Brand
1. Shade
Stay cool in the shade! Seek shade under an umbrella, tree, or other structure. Savvy marketers can draw a crowd when they invest in a tent or canopy branded with their logo for outdoor events like golf outings, concerts, or farmer’s markets.
2. Sunscreen
Broad-spectrum sunscreen that filters out both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 15 or higher is a must for the best protection. There are two varieties of sunscreen, chemical- and mineral-based. Chemical sunscreens are the most common option. They absorb into the skin and soak up the UV rays dispersing them away from the skin. Mineral sunscreens are also readily available. They act as a shield, physically blocking UV rays from the skin. Custom-printed sunscreen is a promotional win at any outdoor event.
3. Clothing
When possible, wear clothing that can provide protection from UV rays. Fabrics are rated with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). This factor indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) the fabric will allow to reach the skin. The Cancer Foundation recommends a minimum of UPF 30. Since UPF-rated clothing, long sleeves, and pants are not always practical or available, at a minimum wear a logoed t-shirt or other cover-up when out in the sun. Branded t-shirts make a great giveaway at sunny charity events, fairs, or festivals.
4. Hat
For the most protection, a hat with a brim that shades the face, ears, and back of the neck is ideal. A tightly woven fabric works best to protect skin from UV rays. Gifting fans a baseball cap at sporting events can help shield their face and scalp but keep branded sunscreen handy for their ears and neck too!
5. Sunglasses
Sunglasses protect eyes from damaging UV rays. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States meet this standard. Choose from a wide variety of logoed sunglasses to compliment your brand and endure sunny days for seasons to come.
